This care focuses on comprehensive attention to the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of children with incurable illnesses and their families. The idea is to fill their lives with LIFE.

What are the differences between Pediatric Palliative Care and Adult Palliative Care?

Pediatric palliative care is a longer-term care process, often lasting years. It is important to keep in mind that children are constantly developing physically, psychologically, and emotionally.

How many children need Pediatric Palliative Care in Spain?

In Spain, there are 60,000 families. Only 15% are served. In Madrid, approximately 3,500, of which approximately 30% are served.

What is the scope of the Fundação porque Ao vivo ?

We currently serve families in the Autonomous Community of Madrid and Aragon. We also support the dissemination and training of volunteers and public and private entities throughout Spain.

No. The professionals at Fundação porque Ao vivo coordinate with the Pediatric Palliative Care team at the Niño Jesús Hospital to optimize the use of their resources and care for families.

Does Fundação porque Ao vivo only serve children from the Niño Jesús Hospital in Madrid or Miguel Servet Hospital in Aragon?

No. Any patient receiving Pediatric Palliative Care can be seen by the Fundação porAo vivo . Families who have unexpectedly lost a child and want support with their grief sometimes come to the Fundação . We always assess their needs to assist them or direct them to a more appropriate resource.

Are public health resources insufficient?

We don’t know if they are insufficient but the needs of families are endless. Excellent care is provided in Madrid by a team that can respond 24/7. What Fundação porque Ao vivo provides are additional services that are not included in the usual service portfolio of a public Pediatric Palliative Care unit.

What is CAPPI?

It is the first comprehensive pediatric palliative care center in Spain. It was created in Madrid because the public health system here guarantees care for children with palliative needs and their families. The CAPPI will complement this care with additional resources for respite and socialization. It will become the first intermediate resource between conventional acute care hospital admissions and home hospitalization.

What services will be provided at CAPPI?

Rooms for children to receive respite from caregivers, a Day Center, an Integration Classroom, a Therapy Area, a Training Center for professionals, and end-of-life apartments.

What is CAPPI's capacity to care for children in palliative care?

The Comprehensive Pediatric Palliative Care Center is designed to accommodate 30 children in family respite care, although it can be expanded to 60 patients if necessary.

It will also have 24 beds distributed throughout its Day Care Center, as well as four apartments designed for end-of-life care.

When will the CAPPI begin offering Pediatric Palliative Care in Madrid?

The CAPPI will begin operating in Madrid in mid-2026, complementing public health from then on to offer comprehensive care services in Pediatric Palliative Care.
